Frigiliana- 7 km inland from Nerja is one of the prettiest Moorish villages of the Axarquia. Hundreds of visitors flock daily to its older parts. The village folk still live mainly from agriculture and construction. It has twice received prettiest village awards in a national contest. A tour through the old Moorish quarters Barribarto, shows, apart from the Moorish architecture, twelve ceramic tile pictures telling the interesting story of the Moriscos rebellion and the battle of Frigiliana in 1569. The day of San Sebastián is celebrated in January and the annual village fair in June which includes a romería, (procession) taking the efigy of the saint, San Antón, down into the ravine below Frigiliana, followed by much merrymaking with the local sweet wine followed by bull running in the Street on Sunday morning at 8.am. Also of special interest are the processions in Holy Week. Before each fiesta the already white houses are whitewashed again by the women, after all they have to keep up the good name of the village...
There are lots of walking routes to explore around the area, plus guided tours of the village and even a nighttime ghost tour.
Some
of the bars provide live music.
